If you’re an investor (and even if you’re not), the name Warren Buffett means something. Certainly the investing world hangs on Buffett’s every word and monitors his every action. He is, after all, the Oracle of Omaha! And as such, the Berkshire Hathaway portfolio is where many investors look when they want to see exactly where Buffett’s attention is on Wall Street.

As of Q4 2021, the Berkshire Hathaway stock portfolio is worth $293,447,417,000, staked on approximately 43 companies. Additionally, on the corporate investment side, the holding company has a controlling interest in some 70 businesses. Together with a sizable cash position, these investments make up one of the most prolific investment portfolios in the world. Here’s a closer look at it.

What you need to know about the Berkshire Hathaway portfolio.

The Berkshire Hathaway Portfolio: A Look at the Stock Holdings

Unlike other super investors who constantly add and divest positions over time, Warren Buffett has kept the Berkshire Hathaway portfolio relatively consistent year-over-year. To clarify, the portfolio averages just three or four major movements per year. And, new additions since 2020 include Snowflake Inc., Chevron, AbbVie, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Aon plc, T-Mobile U.S., Royalty Pharma plc, Marsh & McLennan and Floor & Decor Holdings. And below, I share a list of companies companies owned and the percentage of the portfolio that ownership stake represents.

The portfolio as of Q4 2021:

Thanks to Apple’s weight, the Berkshire Hathaway portfolio is slightly overweight in the Information Technology sector. In addition, Buffett also has an affinity for Financials, evidenced by several major holdings. Consumer Staples also occupy around 12% of the total portfolio. Curiously, Buffett’s portfolio is completely absent from Industrials.

Companies Under the Berkshire Hathaway Umbrella

The Berkshire Hathaway portfolio includes a lot more than equity investments. And as a holding company, it’s also the parent organization for a multitude of other brands. Here’s a complete list of businesses that Berkshire Hathaway either A) owns entirely or B) owners a controlling stake in:

The list of companies within the Berkshire Hathaway corporate portfolio is more diverse than the organization’s stock portfolio. In this way, the entire company is well-diversified. And, what the stock portfolio lacks in diversity, the corporate portfolio makes up for in cash-positive businesses spanning most major sectors.

Berkshire’s Cash and Equivalents

As of 2021, Warren Buffett and Berkshire Hathaway also have an astounding $149.2 billion in liquid cash. This historic sum is often referred to as Buffett’s “elephant gun:” a metaphor that’s meant to illustrate its significant buying power. There’s strong speculation that Buffett will use a portion of this liquid capital to acquire another company.

Buffett has voiced his concern of having this much liquid cash on hand, especially during a period of inflation. While it’s unclear which company he’s likely to buy, it’s seemingly a matter of when he decides to pull the trigger.

The World’s Most-Tracked Portfolio

Institutional and retail investors from around the world track the Berkshire Hathaway portfolio as a way to get inside the mind of legendary investor Warren Buffett.
